KEEPING KIDS SAFE
KEEPING KIDS SAFE A small label can give parents great peace of mind as far as their children are concerned. That’s the philosophy behind Child ID, a Guelph- based Company. Founded in 1995, in Kitchener, Child ID’s patented system is safe and has proven effective in the recovery of over 18 children as well as families’ lost belongings. With over 45,000 families registered, Child I.D. operates in mostly urban areas across Canada and is now operating in the United States. Child I.D. offers an identification program, which provides families with an unlimited supply of iron-on identification labels for their children’s clothing, shoes, knapsacks, etc. Outdoor weatherproof identification stickers can be placed on literally anything that leaves the house. Key rings, which list the family’s code, can be used for school bags, sports bags, luggage etc. The labels and stickers protect the families privacy as they contain only the company name and a message that reads “if found call” and a toll free number as well as a code. The code is specific to each family; this ensures the prompt and accurate identification of a child after a 1-800 number is called. If anyone locates a lost child who is wearing the identification labels, a phone call is all it takes to identify the child and contact the parents. Families that register with Child ID receive a kit, which they complete and keep in their possession. Included in the kit are fingerprint kits, wallet-sized identification profile cards on which parents record the child’s personal information and picture and the keep in their wallet so that they always have their child’s identification on their person. The kits also contain abduction prevention colouring
books as well as Emergency Medical Profile kits. These EMP’s were designed by paramedics to assist emergency personnel in the event of an accident. The EMP, which is adhered to the baby or booster seat, lists all of the child’s specific medical information. “Children do not carry ID, if they did they would likely loose it, there’s more ID on the neighbour’s dog then the children when they leave the house. We offer so much more than simply finger print kits, it’s not even funny”, says Scott Irwin, Atlantic Regional Director. Child ID has a database containing the identification codes assigned to families so there is no danger of anyone identifying the child except Child ID. Irwin says the service is also being used to identify people who suffer from Alzheimer’s, as well as the intellectually challenged. In one case Child ID has recovered a 21 year-old autistic man twice. Child ID Canvassers have been thoroughly screened and can be clearly identified by their uniforms. Child ID Canvassers do not collect any sensitive information about children. No information about families registered is shared with any third party. With its Dartmouth based operation, Child ID’s unique program is now readily available from coast to coast. The company’s service, coupled with a direct awareness campaign, brings a new level of comfort and security to parents.
